The brown crab, also known as the ‘edible crab’ is one of the UK's most recognisable crustaceans. They are found all over the north western Atlantic Ocean, from Norway to Portugal, including the Mediterranean Sea.
Brown crabs are opportunistic predators and scavengers, feeding on shellfish, worms and smaller crustaceans, which they crush with their strong claws. Slow-growing and long-lived, they can survive for 20 years or more, playing an important role in coastal ecosystems.
