Butterfish

(Pholis gunnellus)

Also known as the Rock Gunnell. They are commonly found on the north east coast of the United Kingdom, particularly in rockpools in the intertidal zone.

When out of the water, butterfish have the ability to "breathe air", like other species in the Gobidae family, by taking air into their esophagus where it diffuses through the lining. They can also absorb oxygen through their outer skin, which is aided by a layer of mucus. However, their respiration rate is significantly reduced out of water.
