Lemon Sole

(Microstomus kitt)

Like all flatfish, it starts its life looking like a typical fish - early on in development -still in their larval stage they undergo a metamorphopsias - FROM- a pelagic symmetrical larvae (same as other fish) to a benthic asymmetrical juvenile. They are thought to of evolved this way to hide from predation and to be excellent ambush hunter perfectly adapted to life as a demersal PREDATOR fish.

Although the name suggest morphology more closely related to dover sole with a rounded head, lemon sole share more similiarity with flatfish such as the plaice, flounder and dab. They are more diamond in shape with a mottled appreance that can change colour to suit its surroundings. This camouflage enables this flat fish to feed on small worms, crustaceans and chitons.
