Shanny

(Lipophrys pholis)

These quirky fish can be identified by their large head and eyes giving quite a comical expression! These fish are a common site in UK rockpools, they have a distinctive mottled pattern that allows them to blend in perfectly with the rocks, making them hard to spot. They are opportunistic feeders and will eat a wide and varied diet including: algae, worms, barnacles and shrimp. As with many rockpool species they have adapted to be able to survive out of water. As long as the are they are in remains damp shannies can not only survive but spend a large amount of time out of the water. They can absorb oxygen through their skin.
